Bishop Frederic Baraga helped develop a writing system for the Ojibwe language in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as produced religious texts in Ojibwe for Native Americans to read. Baraga spent much of his life ministering to Ojibwe (Chippewa) communities in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and earned the nickname "the Snowshoe Priest" for traveling hundreds of miles each year on snowshoes during the winter, hence the snowshoes in the canoe.
The churches in the treeline are Alpena's historical Catholic churches and in the sky, are the Saints those churches are named after.
Thank you to All Saints Parish for the opportunity to contribute to the beautiful city and children of Alpena.
